What's All the Fuss?

by Bill Bergwall, Gambling Treatment Program Director, Fairview University Hospital

What's all the full with kids and gambling?  Isn't it just a part of everyday life today?  Don't we use gambling words to describe everyday situations?  What do you tell your friends before you take a test?   Good luck.  In Minnesota, when you agree with something a friend says you may respond, "You bet."

Gambling has become commonly accepted, but for some, it can be a very serious problem.  I work with people with this problem every day.

How you think about gambling can have a great impact on your life.   For example, do you believe people who gamble and win have a special gambling skill??? Not so, gambling is a game of chance NOT skill.  The truth is the more you gamble, the more you will lose.  If you believe it is any other way, you may develop problems later in life.  You may believe that "gambling skills" can bring a person happiness, attention of friends, and money to buy whatever you want.  The truth is the more you gamble the more you will lose.  Gambling can bring money problems, lying to parents and friends or stealing money to cover gambling losses.  It is important that you tell someone you trust if you are having problems right now with gambling - tell a friend, teacher, your parents or counselor.  In that way, the fuss doesn't become the trouble you got into because of gambling.

Remember - the more you gamble, the more you will lose. True Story.
